When someone dies

There is a lot to organise when someone dies. To help us update our records you need to tell us the following information:

  • the full name and address of the person who has died, the date they died and whether they owned or rented the property they were living in
  • if they owned the property, were they the sole owner? If not, details of the other owner(s)
  • if they rented the property, the date their tenancy ended and the landlords name and address
  • the name and address of the executor(s)
  • the date furniture was/is to be removed from the property
  • If there is still someone living there they may be entitled to a Single Occupier Discount

If the property concerned is now un-occupied and the deceased was the sole owner it will be exempt from Council Tax until six months after the date that letters of administration or probate has been granted. If the deceased was not the sole owner, the Council Tax liability reverts to the remaining owner(s).
