Following a competitive Expression of Interest (EOI) process, The Design Cabin Community C.I.C was selected as the successful applicant for the temporary management of the main hall at the Freight House in Rochford.
This six-month opportunity, granted under a licence to occupy, aims to ensure the hall remains a vibrant and accessible space for Rochford residents while long-term options for the building are considered. The Design Cabin Community C.I.C will take responsibility for day-to-day management of the main hall, delivering a programme of activities and events that reflect the needs and interests of the wider community.
Councillor Daniel Efde, Chair of Economic Development, Regeneration and Tourism Committee at Rochford District Council, said: “We’re delighted to welcome The Design Cabin Community C.I.C into the Freight House. Their vision for a creative, inclusive space aligns with our cultural tourism ambitions and gives residents and visitors something to be excited about. This is a great step in reconnecting the community with a building that means so much to Rochford."
James Edmunds, Founder & Executive Director of The Design Cabin Community C.I.C, added: “We’re thrilled to be reopening the much-loved Freight House from 1st July to 31st December 2025. As a Rochford resident myself, I know just how important this space is to the local community. Many residents have said they wanted to see the building brought back into use - now the opportunity is here, it’s time to make the most of it.
“Together with our partners, we’re excited to breathe life back into this cherished venue. During the interim six months, we’ll be hosting a range of in-house community and cultural events, alongside making the space available for private bookings. If you’d like to share your ideas or get involved by volunteering your time, we’d love to hear from you.”
The Council looks forward to working closely with The Design Cabin Community C.I.C over the coming months and encourages local residents to take part in upcoming events.
The Design Cabin Community C.I.C. is working in partnership with Cultural Engine CIC and Eternity Events to help shape the cultural development and event programme at the Freight House.
