Rochford District Council is required by law to ensure that discounts are claimed correctly. We do this by carrying out reviews. Where circumstances change and you are no longer entitled to a discount there is a legal obligation to let us know so we can update your Council Tax bill. Each year local authorities receive a high volume of applications for single person discount. Sadly, some of these applications are claimed either in error or fraudulently. Financial penalties can be imposed if we establish that a discount has been claimed where there is no entitlement or where a resident fails to tell us where their circumstances have changed. In both cases, in addition to the penalty, we will cancel the discount and any money owed will need to be repaid. Checks will be made to ensure all single person discounts are awarded correctly. However, we understand that in some cases, circumstances may not be so easy to explain.
