Rayleigh Windmill retains prestigious VisitEngland Quality Assured Status

Date

Rayleigh Windmill has once again been awarded the VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction accreditation, celebrating its continued excellence as both a heritage landmark and a valued community space.

VisitEngland’s Quality Scheme sets the standard for tourism businesses across the country. Attractions are assessed by trained professionals who carry out detailed inspections using strict criteria, ensuring a consistently high standard of visitor experience.

This year’s assessment highlighted the outstanding contribution of the Windmill’s volunteer team. The assessor praised their impressive knowledge of the site and their genuine enthusiasm for sharing its story. Visitors are not only captivated by the Windmill’s history and mechanics, but also by the rich heritage of Rayleigh, brought to life through a fascinating collection of artefacts. The experience offers a true treasure trove for both locals and tourists.

Cllr Daniel Efde, Chair of the Economic Development, Regeneration and Tourism Committee at Rochford District Council, said: "The Rayleigh Windmill is a great example of how heritage and community come together to create something truly special. This recognition from VisitEngland reflects the dedication of our volunteers and the value the Windmill brings to both residents and visitors. We’re proud to see it celebrated once again."

Rayleigh Windmill’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, Trevor Rand, said: "My fellow volunteers and I are so pleased to receive such high praise from the VisitEngland representative who visited us last month. It’s something we’ve worked hard to maintain over many years, and with the support of our new volunteers, we’re able to pass on our experience and knowledge to a new generation, many of whom already have a strong interest in the Windmill’s history."

Rayleigh Windmill is open to visitors until the end of September, with opening hours on Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of £1 per person to support the site’s upkeep. In addition to its appeal as a historic attraction, the Windmill also serves as a distinctive and charming venue for weddings.
