New lighting scheme set to improve safety and accessibility in Sweyne Park

Date

A key route through Sweyne Park in Rayleigh is set to benefit from improved lighting thanks to a joint initiative between Rochford District Council and Rayleigh Town Council. The project aims to enhance public safety, support active travel, and tackle anti-social behaviour by installing energy-efficient LED lighting along a well-used section of the bridleway.

Funded through Rochford District Council’s Community Safety Fund (CSF), the scheme reflects the councils’ shared commitment to creating safer, more accessible public spaces for residents and visitors.

The works will cover the stretch between Victoria Avenue and Priory Chase, with installation scheduled to begin on 27 May 2025 and expected to take approximately four weeks to complete.

During this time, users of the bridleway may experience temporary disruption. Pedestrians will be directed to follow marked diversion routes, and horse riders are advised to wait until it is safe to proceed.

Councillor Lisa Newport, Chair of the Communities, Wellbeing & Housing Committee said: “We’re committed to creating safer, more welcoming spaces for everyone in our district. This lighting project is a great example of how we can use targeted funding to improve public areas, encourage healthy lifestyles, and address concerns around safety and anti-social behaviour. I’d also like to thank residents and park users for their patience and understanding while these works are carried out, it’s very much appreciated.”§
