Councillor Jo McPherson named Rochford District Council’s new Chairman

Date

Rochford District Council has appointed Councillor Jo McPherson as Chairman for the 2025–2026 municipal year at its meeting of Annual Council this week (Tuesday 20 May).

Having lived in the Rochford District for over 40 years, Councillor McPherson has built strong ties to the local community. A mother of two and grandmother, she brings both personal and professional experience to the role.

Over the past 25 years, she has been involved in a wide range of voluntary work - from helping ex-offenders find employment, to encouraging young people to volunteer, and supporting animal welfare causes. In 2012, she led the team that recruited and supported Essex Ambassadors during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

She continues to give her time to local causes, serving as a trustee for organisations such as Achieve Thrive Flourish (ATF), which runs inclusive community activities for young people. She also supports Friends of Wakering Common and the Wakering Defibrillator Project, both of which contribute to local wellbeing.

Following her appointment, Councillor McPherson, new Chairman of Rochford District Council said: “It is a true honour to serve as Chairman of Rochford District Council. I’m committed to making a positive difference throughout my term. I look forward to working with residents, community groups and fellow councillors to support local initiatives and strengthen connections across the district.”

As part of her role, Councillor McPherson has chosen Rayleigh & Rochford Council for Voluntary Services (RRAVS) and South East and Central Essex MIND as her charities to support during her tenure. She will be working closely with both organisations to raise awareness and funds for their work.

Councillor McPherson added, “By working with the chosen charities, I hope to shine a light on men’s mental health and help expand support and activities for teenagers. These are issues that affect many people, often quietly. Through greater awareness and community support, I believe we can help more individuals feel understood, valued, and connected.”

Councillor Simon Wootton was appointed as Vice Chairman.
