Planning applications have been submitted to regenerate two properties in South Street, Rochford.

The two separate applications have been submitted by Rochford District Council as part of efforts to tackle the local housing shortage, while also providing an income which will help the council deliver services in the future.
The first seeks to change the use of No 19 South Street from an underused office block for council staff into eight one bedroom flats. In addition, land to the rear of the property would be used to provide 25 flats (20 one bedroom flats and 5 two bedroom flats), with a new access onto South Street. The wall at number 17 South Street would be demolished, and associated landscaping and car parking provided.

The second seeks to demolish the building at number 57 South Street, and redevelop the site (53-57 South Street) to provide a four storey building comprising 13 residential units (11 one bedroom units and two 2 bedroom units), with 8 car parking spaces and associated landscaping.

Matt Harwood-White, Assistant Director – Commercial Services, said: “A public exhibition has already been held in relation to these plans, as we are seeking to engage with local residents and businesses as much as possible throughout the process. I am pleased to announce that planning applications have now been submitted for both sites, with detailed information available on our website.

“This is an important project for the Rochford District as the proposals seek to help meet local housing needs, while also providing an income which will help meet the current financial challenge faced by all local authorities. As a council we are currently reviewing the future of all of our assets, as we are seeking to take a forward-thinking approach in order to meet residents’ needs, balance our budgets, and also regenerate the heart of Rochford town centre.”

The plans are available to view on the council’s website at www.rochford.gov.uk/planningapps with the related applications being 17/00557/FUL and 17/00530/FUL
