Our Celebrations

Residents of Rochford celebrated Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style over the long bank holiday weekend, with scores of street parties.

The festivities got a formal start with the lighting of the Rochford District Beacon in Rayleigh, on Thursday evening. The evening also saw the illumination of the Rayleigh Windmill in purple light.

Our beacon joined lanterns lit across the nation, in line with the ancient British tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees by lighting beacons.

Hundreds of people turned out for the event, which included music from the Rayleigh Salvation Army Band, joined by members of the Rayleigh Royal British Legion, Rayleigh Army Cadets, and representatives from the Rayleigh Scouts and Rayleigh Girl Guides.

Cllr Mike Steptoe, Chairman of Rochford District Council, and Reverend Kim Lepley oversaw the lighting along with local dignitaries including Mr David Hurst, Her Majesty's Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, Mark Francois, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, and Mayors and Chairmen of other local authorities as well as Members and officers of Rochford District Council and many local residents.
