A huge audience gathered at the Mill Arts and Events Centre on October 13 2011 for the fourth Rochford District Sports Awards, sponsored by Virgin Active.
Nearly 200 guests heard stories of outstanding contributions by the very best of the sporting talent in the District at the ceremony, which was compered by BBC Essex’s Ben Fryer.

After being presented with his award, the Rochford District Sports Personality of the Year, 66-year-old Philip Harper, said: “I was so surprised to win, it just goes to show that age is no barrier when it comes to sport. You just have to have the motivation and ambition to achieve your goals.”
The Chairman of Rochford District Council, Councillor Simon Smith, added: “All of the winners, the nominees and everyone that entered deserves praise for representing the District with such distinction in their chosen sports.
It’s been a wonderful evening and we’ve heard some truly inspirational stories from all those who have taken part. I look forward to seeing how their careers develop and wish them continued success in the future.”
