Following on from the success of winning a National Recycling Award, Rochford District Council are working in partnership with Essex Textiles to provide a collection of old and unwanted clothes and shoes from the kerbside for recycling.
Building upon the success of the pilot scheme that was introduced in July, Essex Textiles will continue to operate a textiles recycling service, collecting materials such as clothes, curtains, bedding, towels, handbags, hats, cloths, belts and paired shoes. Textiles will be collected from houses in the District on the same day as their grey recyclables bins, and weekly from flats alongside their refuse. Essex Textiles will also collect textiles from residential homes and the collection details can be provided by the relevant warden.
Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Councillor Michael Starke said “In October, Rochford District Council won a National Recycling Award which was due to the hard work and enthusiasm of the residents. We would love to continue to build on this success by asking residents to use the textiles recycling service to both further increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of material that is sent to landfill”.
We recommend that textile bags are put out in the morning of the collection day from 7am. This will avoid textiles becoming wet overnight and prevent theft from unofficial collectors.

your web site is not very clear. Textiles recycling – do you mean clothes that are ripped/damaged as well as average quality ones. Do you mean bits of fabric that are the wastage ie if you were making a pair of curtains can I put the odd bits of fabric in the pink bag.
Our charity shop takes ‘junk textiles’ that they could not possibly sell as it is maybe stained or too grubby, but they obviously do something else with it. CAN THIS SORT OF ‘JUNK TEXTILES’ GO IN THIS PINK BAG. Please advise, thanks.

Dear Karen,
Essex Textiles collect in the District – they use blue bags. All clothes taken by Essex Textiles are re used and where they can’t be re used they are graded and sent for recycling to be turned into cloths, some of which are used for industrial purposes. They will take fabric cut offs etc as long as they are not soiled. If they are stained or soiled they can’t be used.
If you have any more queries, please contact us on recycling@rochford.gov.uk or call 01702 318111
Many thanks

What has happened to the collection of textile recyclables? I have put a blue bag on two consecutive collection days – on both occasions the bags were placed at the front of my property before 7am. The bags were not collected – why not?

We apologise for this and are continuously working to improve the textile collection service. In any instances where your blue bags are not collected on Recycling week please call the free phone number on the bag to arrange a collection. If you can email customerservices@rochford.gov.uk or call 01702 318111 to confirm your address we can pass this on to the contractor and ensure that you are not missed in the future.
