LAPTTOP (Lifelong Access to PC Through Training for Older People) is a computer training project run by RRAVS (Rayleigh Rochford and District Association for Voluntary Service).
LAPTTOP’s objective is to help people over 60 years of age maintain contact with friends and family using computers and to encourage activity later in life. This is achieved by courses, home visits and a computer club.
Courses are held in Rochford Library, Rayleigh and other venues by demand. A team of volunteers give their time to help with these activities. LAPTTOP has been helping people in the district for nearly six years.
Recently the Hullbridge Centre was looking for Beginners Computer Training for its members and LAPTTOP was able to offer their Beginners Course which covers basic computer skills including operation of keyboard, mouse, word processing, web browsing, emails, spreadsheets, digital cameras and printing.
Having become aware of the huge opportunities their computers offer, members have expressed their wish to learn more.
One member has expressed his desire to use his computer connected to an electronic organ to record and mix his music.
Another has expressed her desire to use her computer to make crossstitch patterns from her own artwork and photographs. Others wish to use their computer for their hobbies of photography and family history.
Many of the members have relations abroad and with the use of Skype, a web camera and microphone can now talk face to face with their relations at pre-arranged times.
The next courses start in September and cost £25.
