activerochford and Rochford District Sports Council merge

Posted on 01 June 2009 by admin

Two networks that have been leading the way in the Rochford District for sport and physical activity have made the decision to merge.

activerochford, the Community Activity Network for the Rochford District, and Rochford District Sports Council will now both come under the activerochford name. They will work towards the achievement of a coordinated approach in order to create, develop and promote opportunities for local people to take part in sport and physical activity in the Rochford District.

The talented athletes grants scheme previously administered by Rochford District Sports Council has been extended to include club grants. During 2009-10 individuals that are competing at a minimum of County standard or equivalent within their sports will be able to apply for between £100-£300 (previously the maximum was £100) and clubs will be able to apply for between £100-£500 for specific projects.

activerochford Chair Dave Record commented: ‘I feel that bringing the two bodies together gives us greater opportunities to support Sport and Recreation within Rochford District, both for Individuals and for Clubs’.

Outgoing Sports Council Chair and new Grants Sub Group lead Bruce Smart added: ‘The merger has given an opportunity to review the grant procedure and bring the awards more in line with the expenditure sports people face in the pursuit of excellence’.

The first 2 recipients of the grants are Chelsea Coker for her achievements in both the shot and discus and Robert Heaton for tennis. Pictured is Chelsea receiving her cheque from Rochford District Council’s Sports Development Officer Mark Aldous and activerochford Chair, Dave Record.

The full criteria and application forms can be found in related links at the bottom of the page or by contacting Mark Aldous at Rochford District Council on 01702 318121 or mark.aldous@rochford.gov.uk

activerochford will also be organising this year’s Rochford District Sports Awards as well as a variety of other projects aimed at getting the local community physically active.
