Rayleigh Area Action Plan – Issues and Options Discussion
Document
What can we do to improve Rayleigh Town Centre?
We are currently in the process of producing Area Action Plans
for Rochford, Hockley and Rayleigh centres. Area Action Plans will
be used to stimulate regeneration or enhancement, guide public and
private investment within an area, protect areas particularly
sensitive to change, resolve conflicting objectives in an area
subject to development pressures, and provide robust policies
determined at a local level to ensure that future development
reflects local needs and issues. We are at a very early stage in
the process of developing the Area Action Plans and want to obtain
your ideas, views and comments before we proceed with them.
We recently asked for views on Hockley and Rochford centres and
now we want to hear your thoughts on potential options for
Rayleigh.
Using government funding provided through the national Local
Authority Business Growth Incentive (LABGI) Scheme, Rochford
District Council has teamed up with Urban Initiatives, one of
Britain's leading urban planning and design practices, to assess
issues in Rayleigh and present a variety of options for
consideration.
There are a range of opportunity areas within the town centre
and a variety of options relating to these have been set out for
consideration, including lower levels of intervention such as
cosmetic improvements to shopfronts, through to larger more
strategic interventions, such as redevelopment of existing
buildings. Other suggestions include the relaxation of planning
policies that restrict non-retail uses with the town centre, the
relocation of the market to a more central location, changes to
traffic management, in addition to an array of other options we
want to hear your views on.
We are keen to stress though that it is merely a discussion
document, nothing has yet been decided, and we want your views.
The discussion document is available to view as a related
document below.
This initial consultation will run until 5pm on 30th January
2010. Following the results of this consultation, more detailed
options will be produced for further community involvement later in
2010.
