Great Wakering
Lying at the most easterly end of the District's mainland, Great
Wakering is a large village with a history to match. People have
lived in this area since the late Neolithic times and the listing
of two manors in the Domesday Book of 1086, show how important it
was during the Ages.
The Church of St Nicholas, which dates from the 12th century, is
situated at the far end of the High Street, as the village has
developed considerably into a residential area away from its
historical centre. The residents are well served by local shops and
pubs, as well as a network of community centres and groups. One of
the village's claims to fame is that it is reputedly the driest
place in England.
