Drainage and Sewers
The network of drains and sewers which take sewage away from
your property is part "public" and part "private".The sewers
normally under the road or pavement are usually owned and
maintained by Anglian Water. These are known as "public"
sewers.
The drains and sewers which connect your property to the
"public" sewer are private and belong to you as the household
owner. Therefore, responsibility for maintenance and repairs is the
household's/owner's, similar to the rest of the property.
However, Anglian Water are responsible for any sewer constructed
before December 1936 if serving two or more properties.
In some cases, mainly on housing estates, the complete network
of drains and sewers are private and are the joint responsibility
of all contributing properties upstream of the problem.
