Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse is any incident of threatening behaviour,
violence or abuse between two people over the age of 16 and who are
(or have been) in a relationship/family relationship, regardless of
gender. Abuse can be psychological, physical, sexual, financial or
emotional and family members are defined as mother, father, son,
daughter, brother, sister or grandparent (whether directly related
or by law).
Rochford District Council has a dedicated Housing
Officer who deals with domestic abuse who can help
someone experiencing abuse. The Council places a strong emphasis on
tackling abuse and offers advice/assistance to all victims.
The Council operates a Sanctuary Scheme for people experiencing
domestic abuse. The scheme enables victims to stay in their home
whilst offering support and practical measures to minimise the
problems they may experience. The scheme can also provide a safe
room within the victim’s home where they can shelter from violence
and wait for emergency assistance.
The Council works with Basildon’s Women’s Aid Group to operate
the Parklands Centre. It is primarily designed for women and
children who have suffered domestic abuse and offers trained
volunteers who can provide support and advice.
