Litter

Litter is waste that has not been properly disposed of. Litter can be anything from plastic bottles and drinks cans to chewing gum and cigarette butts.

Rochford District Council has a legal duty to collect litter and refuse from public places (so far is practicable). If a piece of private land is littered the owner of the land should accept the responsibility for clearing the litter.

Litter is a criminal offence, subject to a maximum fine of £2,500. Both the police and the Local Authority can prosecute individuals. If you have witnessed areas where you think litter is a problem then let us know.

Either pick up a report card from your local library, call us on: 01702 318111 or report it online.
