How to Register to Vote
You need to be on the electoral register to vote in UK elections
and referendums. You are not automatically registered even if you
pay council tax. The electoral register is the list of everyone who
is registered to vote.
You can only apply to have your name added to the register if
you are:
- Aged 16 or over (you must tell us your date of birth if you are
under 18, so that you will be entitled to vote as soon as you turn
18)
- A British, Irish, qualifying Commonwealth or European Union
Citizen*
- Resident at your address for at least six months in the
year
*Please see the Related Document entitled "Who Can Register to
Vote?" for a full list of Commonwealth and European Union
countries.
Between December and August the register is updated monthly. If
you have changed address since completing your annual canvass form,
or your name does not appear on the register, you can complete a
voter registration form to have your name added to the register.
The voter registration form can be found below under Related
Documents.
